Every Bruce Dickinson Solo Album Ranked

Bruce Dickinson, the legendary Iron Maiden vocalist, released his first solo album in 19 years titled The Mandrake Project. This marks his seventh solo studio album. This album has been a very personal journey for me and I am extremely proud of it. Roy Z and I have been planning, writing, and recording it for years, and I am very excited for people to finally hear it. I’m even more excited at the prospect of getting out on the road with this amazing band that we have put together, to be able to bring it to life. We’re planning to play as many shows as we can in as many places as possible, for as many people as we can!

#7 Skunkworks (1996)

The alternative rock-laden album lands squarely on rank seven. This is not to say this is the “worst” album. Rather, this album goes out on a limb. Branching into a completely different direction than the previous two solo releases. This is the huge benefit of recording solo albums. Taking risks without jeopardizing the Iron Maiden brand. Love it or hate it, at least appreciate it. The best tracks are “Back From The Edge” and “Inside The Machine”.

#6 Tattooed Millionaire (1990)

Releasing your first solo album is anxiety-filled. The critics, the comparisons, the expectations. On his first release, Bruce Dickinson showcases his vocals and the album has a solid rock and roll sound. Some critics panned the album as lacking originality and depth. Hearing the blending sounds AC/DC and Def Leppard, the album casts a wide net of rock anthems, radio rock, and is genuinely energetic and fun to listen to. The best tracks are “Tattooed Millionaire” and “Son of a Gun”.

#5 Balls To Picasso (1994)

Following up with his second album four years later, Bruce partnered with guitarist and producer Roy Z. Unknowingly, this union with Roy Z would later produce some of his best albums to come. This album received high praise for its diverse musical styles and Dickinson’s powerful vocal delivery. The mixing of genres is often criticized as being sloppy. Listening to the diverse arrangements of hard rock, punk, funk, and heavy metal is what makes this album truly enjoyable. The best tracks are “Tears Of The Dragon” and “Cyclops”.

#4 The Mandrake Project (2024)

Bruce Dickinson’s latest solo release, The Mandrake Project, lands right in the middle of the pack. The hype of following up an eighteen-year hiatus between albums is no short undertaking. The album’s production is crisp, and clean, and continues Bruce’s fearless experimentation with sound and music styles. A solid rock and metal offering to the masses. With additional time, this album could easily be swapped or be tied for third place. Fans rejoice! Bruce has once again delivered. The best tracks are “Afterglow of Ragnarok” and “Eternity Has Failed”.

#3 Tyranny Of Souls (2005)

After a seven-year gap, this album packed a punch few saw coming. Bruce’s sixth solo album delivers a solid metal masterpiece. Blending Dickinson’s classic vocal style and an artist re-focusing his creative lens lands this album in the third position. Never resting on one sound, the album is a musical journey exploring the rock and metal landscape. The best tracks are “Abduction” and “A Tyranny of Souls”.

#2 Accident Of Birth (1997)

Getting back to basics is what this album is all about. The fourth album is a traditional return to Bruce’s heavy metal roots after the previous three experimental albums. The album showcased Roy Z and Adrian Smith on guitars. The album delivers what most Iron Maiden fans expected. Some call it one of the best albums Iron Maiden never made. Bruce Dickinson simply roared on this album. A classic in the making. The best tracks are “Darkside Of Aquarius” and ”Road To Hell”.

#1 The Chemical Wedding (1998)

Delivering back-to-back classic albums is what bands all dream of doing. Bruce’s fifth solo album nails it. Dickinson and the team picked up where they left off from Accident of Birth one year later. Once again, the combination of Roy Z and Adrian Smith on guitars, proves lighting can strike twice! Bruce’s epic and melodic voice shines through on every track. The is a classic metal album with a heavy sound, dark themes, and intricate lyrics. The best tracks are “King In Crimson” and “Trumpets of Jericho”.
