Last Monday night, July 8, Train and REO Speedwagon began their co-headlining Summer Road Trip tour, a North American run that will take the two bands nationwide with special guests Yacht Rock Revue.

A tour pairing such as this might suggest high-energy nights of passionate singalongs, fans coming together to sing the catalog of hits that both headlining acts have — and that’s the case, based on this first show.

At the Somerset Amphitheatre in Wisconsin on Monday night, for example, Pat Monahan and his colleagues in Train touched on all the hits (“Meet Virginia,” “Calling All Angels,” “Hey, Soul Sister,” “Drive By,” “Play That Song” and “Drops of Jupiter” among them), while also adding in some other surprises for fans:

50 Ways to Say Goodbye
If It’s Love
Get to Me
Save Me, San Francisco
Meet Virginia
Long Yellow Dress
Play That Song
Parachute
Angel in Blue Jeans
Marry Me
Seven Bridges Road (Steve Young cover)
Bruises (Duet with Sedona Rose)
Lose Control (Teddy Swims cover)
Calling All Angels
Hey, Soul Sister
Drive By
Drops of Jupiter

Kevin Cronin and REO Speedwagon, meanwhile, hit the expected notes as well, with No. 1 hits “Keep On Loving You” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling” highlighting their 12-song set:

Don’t Let Him Go
Take It on the Run
Keep Pushin’
Live Every Moment
Tough Guys
I Wish You Were There
Can’t Fight This Feeling
Son of a Poor Man
Time for Me to Fly
Ridin’ the Storm Out
Encore
Keep On Loving You
Roll With the Changes

The tour continues for the next several weeks — here’s how Monahan and Cronin hyped the tour back when it was first detailed:

Monahan:

“When I was younger I heard a band called REO Speedwagon and fell in love with their numerous, infectious hit songs. Years later I met Kevin Cronin, and thank goodness he’s as great a person as he is a songwriter. This tour won’t just be a great time with great people, but a tour that will have a ton of familiar songs to most generations. I will be wishing I was in the audience as much as I’ll love being on the stage.”

Cronin:

“Pat Monahan and I have done several benefit shows over the years, and now we get to take out our bands for a summer full of music and fun. I love the idea of bringing together people of all ages, who share a common love for well-crafted songs and high energy live performances. The REO boys are stoked about this tour.”
